Pongal is a very popular south Indian dish, mostly found in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states. In Karnataka this dish also goes by the name Huggi. There are two main varieties of pongal. The most common one is called Venn Pongal, made from clarified butter or ghee. This is spicy and is a very common breakfast food. The other variety is chakarai pongal, which is sweet and is commonly made during the Pongal festival.
