Dal makhani is a popular Indian dish made with black lentils (urad dal) cooked in a rich and creamy tomato-based gravy. It is a vegetarian dish that is often served with rice or naan bread.
The name “dal makhani” literally translates to “creamy lentils.” The lentils are cooked until they are soft and creamy, and then they are added to a gravy made with tomatoes, onions, cream, and a variety of spices. The gravy is typically made with a generous amount of butter and cream, which gives dal makhani its signature rich and creamy flavor.

- Whole black lentils – 250g (1 large cup)
- Canned red kidney beans – 100g
- Tomato puree/Tomatoes – 150g/3 medium sized ones.
- Milk – 200ml.
- Butter – 1 tbsp.
Method of preparation
- Soak the black lentils in water for 8 hours and pressure cook.
- Mix the packet content with milk to make the paste.
- Heat 1 tbsp of butter in a pan.
- Make tomato puree by boiling and crushing the tomatoes or use the packaged puree and add that to the pan. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add the spice paste from step# 1 and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add the cooked lentils, kidney beans and 450ml or 2 cups of water and cook the desired consistency is reached. Serve hot.
