Kudam puli also known as Malabar tamarind or Kerala Tamarind, is a souring agent used in a number of curries in Kerala and Karnataka. Kudam puli is a key ingredient for many Kerala Style fish curries. This is a tropical fruit is usually sun dried and then smoked to a dark brown or black color. The fruit looks like a small pumpkin and its color varies from green to yellow. The fruit is well known in Southeast Asia, coastal Karnataka and Kerala and the fruit is also made into a supplement, which is now sold commercially.
