Grated coconut is a very commonly used ingredient of south Indian cuisine. They are prepared fresh by using a grater to scrape off the flesh from split halves of whole coconut. For long term storage and use, they are often stored in frozen format. They are thawed to room temperature before usage. Grated coconut is used commonly in dressings, chutneys and also to extract coconut milk which is used as a thickener agent.
